Got Your 6 Celebrates Senate Passage of “Forever” GI Bill

Largest GI Bill expansion in decade heads to President’s desk

Washington, D.C (August 2, 2017) – Got Your 6 today celebrated the Senate’s bipartisan passage of H.R 3218, The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, commonly referred to as the Forever GI Bill. The unanimous vote came a week after the House’s unanimous passage of the legislation. The bill addresses the exclusions and shortcomings of the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which left thousands of veterans and Gold Star families without full education benefits. The Forever GI Bill, which has the support of Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David Shulkin, now heads to the President’s desk where it is expected to be quickly signed into law.

“The Forever GI Bill is proof that even a divided nation can come together to support our veterans and their families,” said Lauren Augustine, Director of Government Relations for Got Your 6. “This comprehensive bill will provide millions of current and future veterans and their loved ones the peace of mind knowing the education benefits they’ve earned are secure. Since the beginning of this effort, Got Your 6 was excited to be a part of the coalition working to gain the support of dozens of Members from both parties who understand our nation’s responsibility to those who served. We are particularly grateful for the leadership of Chairmen Isakson and Roe, Ranking Members Tester and Walz, Majority Leaders McConnell and McCarthy, and Minority Leaders Schumer and Pelosi for getting this important bill across the finish line.”

The Forever GI Bill includes the following highlights:

  • Extends full Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to all recipients of the Purple Heart;
  • Restores lost Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to service members affected by school closures;
  • Extends the Yellow Ribbon Program to survivors receiving the GI Bill through the Fry Scholarship;
  • Eliminates the 15-year time limit veterans have to utilize their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits; and,
  • Opens up the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Vocational Rehab program to Reservists and National Guardsmen who served or will serve on active duty under 12304, 12304(a), and 12304(b) orders.
