Got Your 6 Hosts WWII Memorial Service Project on 6/6 Day
WASHINGTON (June 6, 2016) – As an Honor Flight of WWII veterans attended a ceremony at the National WWII Memorial commemorating D-Day, Got Your 6 rallied 125 veterans, family members, and civilian supporter volunteers for their 6/6 Day of Service as a way to pay tribute to the Greatest Generation. Volunteers ranging from local school students to Vietnam War veterans helped the National Park Service beautify and clean the WWII Memorial grounds, painting benches, clearing brush, and mulching flowerbeds.
“Today’s theme, ‘Honor their legacy, serve your community,’ embodies everything we do here at Got Your 6, and there is no better way to pay tribute to those who came before us than by directly serving them,” said Got Your 6 executive director and Iraq War veteran Bill Rausch. “This is the first service day we’ve hosted, and today we’ve shown what it means when veterans are empowered to lead a resurgence of community in our nation.”
In welcoming the group, Rausch, was joined by veteran and National Parks Service Ranger James Pierce, and Matt Stiner, Associate Director of Public Engagement at the White House, who read a proclamation by President Barack Obama.
In the proclamation, the president wrote, “America endures because of the brave patriots who bear the incredible burden of protecting our freedom. Our veterans have been tested in ways the rest of us may never fully understand, and when it’s time for them to hang up the uniform, they deserve to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect. By working to help veterans reintegrate into civilian life and change misperceptions about them on our big and small screens, you are helping build a society worthy of their sacrifices.”
