Got Your 6 and Discovery Communications to Showcase Veteran Empowerment in DC on November 10

“Storytellers” program to bust myths about veterans as “broken heroes”

WASHINGTON (Oct. 24, 2016) — The veteran empowerment campaign Got Your 6 is teaming up with Discovery Communications to host its “Storytellers” program on Thursday, November 10 at Discovery Communications’ Silver Spring, Md. headquarters. Got Your 6 Storytellers is an annual event that celebrates the accomplishments and inspirational stories of our nation’s veterans.

The Nov. 10 event will feature veterans including Invictus Games U.S. team captain and Deloitte manager Will Reynolds; Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs Bob McDonald; District Court Judge Lou Olivera from Cumberland County, N.C.; Paralympian Ce-Ce Mazyck; and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Bonnie Carroll.

Got Your 6 Storytellers gathers veterans who deliver TED-style talks about their ideas, accomplishments, philosophies, and the many contributions they are making in their communities and workplaces. The program helps increase awareness of Got Your 6’s campaign to shift the narrative of veterans as “broken heroes” to one focusing on veterans as leaders and civic assets.

Discovery Communications will be live-streaming the Storytellers program via the American Heroes Channel’s (AHC) Facebook page. Additionally, starting Oct. 17, American Heroes Channel is airing Got Your 6’s national PSA and in-program call-out cards that feature myth-busting facts about America’s veterans.

A study commissioned by Got Your 6 revealed that the general population believes veterans are more likely than civilians to be unemployed, undereducated, homeless, and to be afflicted with mental health issues. The reality is much more complex, and the entertainment industry has a role to play in changing the narrative.
