Aspen Dental’s MouthMobile Brings Free Dental Care to Boston Veterans
BOSTON (September 21, 2017) – Local veterans received free dental care today aboard Aspen Dental’s MouthMobile – a 42-foot long dental office on wheels – which travels state to state providing veterans with the dental care they need for a healthy mouth – at no cost. Dentists and their teams from Aspen Dental practices in the area provided free care to 17 veterans. The event included attendance from Secretary of Veterans’ Services, Francisco Ureña, and Boston Commissioner of Veterans’ Services, Giselle Sterling, as well as other civic and community leaders, and representatives from the dental and veteran community.
For Thursday’s stop in Boston, Aspen Dental partnered with Worcester-based Veterans Inc. to help identify and schedule appointments for veterans in need of dental care.
In addition to the free care – fillings, cleanings, X-rays and extractions – veterans had a unique opportunity to meet and talk with Bill Rausch, executive director of Got Your 6, a national veteran’s organization working to empower veterans to lead in their communities. For the past three years, Aspen Dental and Got Your 6 have partnered to raise awareness of the importance of dental care for veterans through Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement.
“What the Aspen Dental team did here in Boston was incredible to experience,” said Rausch. “For both Aspen Dental and the work Got Your 6 does, it is so important for us to be on the ground, listening to veterans to not only hear their stories but really get a sense for what we can do to help provide them the tools for empowerment. Aspen Dental isn’t just giving veterans a healthy smile, they are providing veterans the encouragement to continue their service as leaders and civic assets in communities across the nation.”
Aspen Dental’s MouthMobile has made stops in Massachusetts each year during the annual tour, now in its fourth year, and for good reason: Massachusetts has nearly 350,000 veterans living in the state, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Unless veterans are 100% disabled, have been a prisoner of war, or have a service-related injury to their mouths, they do not receive dental benefits through the VA.
Dr. Arun Srinivasan, who volunteered his time to provide care at the event said, “I’m an officer in the Army, so I’ve seen firsthand what soldiers have to go through to get care through the VA. The amount of care they get is partial. We’re more than happy to help fill the gap in care. My team and I take a lot of pride in being able to provide this service to veterans.”
The MouthMobile now heads to Traverse City, MI and Skokie, IL where it will provide free care for veterans in those states.
