At the end of 2013, Goodwill for America’s Heroes and Their Families reached a milestone of 115,000 veterans and military family members served as a part of the White House’s Joining Forces initiative. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) program shares our goal to help veterans navigate the unique challenges they face in building civilian careers in 2014 and beyond.
On January 16, 2014, city and state politicians, employers, veterans and media gathered in Milwaukee, WI to celebrate the launch of a new partnership between Goodwill Industries International and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that pairs Goodwill’s expertise in workforce development with HOH hiring fairs. As part of the initiative, Goodwill will offer workshops and résumé reviews to attendees and provide individual career assistance for referred job seekers.
Jim Gibbons, CEO of Goodwill Industries International, expressed Goodwill’s commitment to providing employment services to veterans and military families before, during, and after HOH fairs. By connecting veterans and military families to Goodwill, the HOH program ensures that our heroes have continuous wraparound supportive services during their search for their next career.
The kickoff event showcased the types of services that will be available at future tour stops. Seventy employers and veteran service providers met 208 veteran job seekers at Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin’s James O. Wright Center for Work and Training. The local Goodwill facilitated a workshop for over 100 veterans looking to sharpen their job seeking skills, and other veterans were met by Goodwill employees who provided on-site résumé writing, mock interviews and other employment services. More than 1,000 résumés were accepted at the hiring fair, and more than 100 interviews took place on the spot.
The Goodwill and Hiring Our Heroes partnership will continue at hiring events across the United States throughout 2014. To find job and career support services at Goodwill visit us here. To register for a Hiring Our Heroes Hiring Fair near you, visit here.
